The Pass

2009

ATM receipts; pins

The Pass is an array of ATM machine receipts altered by reprogramming the cash machine between transactions. The Pass is one of several works made in this way - ranging from single receipt works to arrays such as this one. The text on the receipts is a fragment of a letter written by Rimbaud in 1878 as he was crossing the Alps on foot. The letter describes the extreme disorientation of crossing a snow-covered landscape, with only the telegraph poles giving any indication of where the road is.

The version of the letter used in this work is taken from Graham Robb's biography of the poet.

In a one off series for the Hendershot gallery this work was accompanied by a sequence of pencil and giclee works depicting partial present day views of the hostel mentioned in the letter.
